Description

A blood red half-crescent moon moves across the night sky.

Although it is said, that the moon turns Blood-red usually during Lunar Eclipse. When the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, it takes on a reddish glow. Also known as Blood Moon, it is caused due to a rare phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. It is the same mechanism responsible for causing colorful sunrises and sunsets and the sky to look blue.

For a crescent moon, the reddish glow is caused due to angles between the three body system of Moon, Sun, and Earth. The reason behind its redness is a common phenomenon called refraction.
When reflected sunlight from the Moon, enters Earth’s atmosphere, the light gets bent, just like it does in a prism. Except here, because the angle at which this usually occurs is low in the sky from a particular viewing location on Earth, that refracted light is passing through the layers of the atmosphere. When low in the sky, the light has furthest to travel.

But why red? Well, blue light, having the shortest wavelength, and thus the highest energy gets scattered away when it hits particles in the atmosphere. But red light, having the longest wavelength and thus the lowest energy, added to the fact that while low in the sky has further to travel than the blue light overhead during the day (we always see orange and red sunsets only when the Sun is lowest in the sky), doesn’t scatter, so that’s the colour we see. Sometimes, the moon gets redder the lower it gets in the sky as there is significantly more atmosphere to go through.
